Aromatherapy dates back over 4000 years. The Egyptians used aromatic plants to create medicines, skin care products, massage oils, fragrant perfumes and other products. India also used plant aromatics as part of the ancient medical practice of Ayurveda, which is still in existence.

BRIEF HISTORY

Egyptians - used aromatic plants to create massage oils, medicines, embalming preparations, skin care Products, fragrant perfumes and cosmetics. They burned Frankincense at sun rise as an offering to the
Gods.

India - used aromatic plants for medicinal purposes, cosmetics as well as other applications.

Greeks - used aromatic plants for medicinal purposes as well as cosmetics.

Romans - acquired their medical knowledge from the Greeks. Rome was soon to become known as the bathing capital of the world as they improved the aromatic oils. Bathing would be followed by aromatic oil massages.

Arabians - thought to have created the process of distilling. Using this process they were able to produce fragrances without oily bases.

Chinese - were using aromatics at about the same time as Egypt.

Aztecs - discovered to have different plants used for medicinal purposes and aromatic oils. Montezuma’s botanical garden was found to be full of medicinal plants when the Spanish invaded South America.

North American Indians - were found to also be using aromatic oils and herbal remedies.

Aromatherapy uses pure essential oils that are extracted from plants, flowers, herbs, trees, etc. Each oil has its own fragrance and personality. They are very expensive to produce due to intensity of processing and the quantity of the plants needed to produce each oil. It is considered both an art and a science. Oils are blended to produce different aromas. Aromas affect each individual differently. Scents can alter your mind and emotions. They can improve the quality of life physically, emotionally and spiritually. A scent can give a feeling of peace and calm or excitement.

Aromatherapy is now a commonly accepted alternative medicine in many countries including the United States.
